Collagen Producing Foods For Skin Elasticity
The older we get, the less elasticity we have in our skin. We notice wrinkles in our skin beginning around the age of 30. However, there are other preventable things that we do without thinking twice that helps to age us even quicker. Moreover, being out in the sun without sunscreen and smoking quickens the aging process. As we get into menopause, (age 45-55) our collagen production in our skin decreases by 1/3 primarily due to the decrease in estrogen.
Of course, there are many skin creams that you can buy with collagen, but do they work? Collagen is found in the 2nd layer of the skin called the dermis.
Putting a topical cream on your skin only temporarily reduces your wrinkle problem and doesn’t effectively penetrate your skin to have lasting effects. With that said, what we want to do is try to increase the collagen in our skin from the inside out.
Here are a few ways to help increase collagen from eating these foods:
Soy- soy has the highest levels of genistein isoflavones that resemble human estrogen. Low estrogen means a decrease in collagen.
Dark Green Vegetables- They are packed with an antioxidant called lutein that helps boost skin hydration and elasticity. Good sources of Dark Green Vegetables include spinach, kale, and cabbage. Good fruit sources of lutein are grapes, kiwi, and oranges.
Foods That Produce Collagen
Red, Yellow, Orange Fruits and Vegetables-Beets, tomatoes, red peppers, sweet potatoes, and carrots have the anti-oxidant lycopene which helps build up a natural UV sunscreen in the skin as high as a level 4. Research per Dr. Ronald Watson of the University of Arizona concluded this finding.
Vitamin C-Citrus fruits are natural sources of collagen production. Fruits such as oranges, strawberries, and lemons are perfect for your daily diet.
Dark Chocolate- Helps increase blood circulation in the skin and helps deliver antioxidants found in Chocolate.
