Ears Can Get Acne Just like the Rest of your Body

Pimples can appear anywhere on your body. Butt acne and vaginal acne are two cases in point. However, another semi uncommon location for pimples is in your ears.

This type of acne can come in one of two forms according to dermatologist Alan Parks. We can get blackheads on the inside of our ears or even inflamed cysts. The cysts typically pop up around the earlobe or even in the conchal bowl, the hollow part of your outer ear.

How do we Typically Get Acne in our Ears?

Pimples in the ear are usually types of clogged pores, either whiteheads or milia. As it turns out, your ears and the skin around them contain oil glands that produce sebum. Sebum is the oil that clogs our pores and causes sebaceous cysts.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a lot you can do to avoid ear pimples. No matter where they are on you, oil glands can clog according to Parks. Some people are, unfortunately, predisposed to getting these pimples. However, washing your ears and around them with an acne cleanser can help some.

How to Take Care of Ear Acne

Ear acne is difficult to treat, according to experts. First off, it’s good to try and clear the blemish yourself with topical acne cream. Topical prescription medications can help treat blackheads. Some examples of these retinoids are Epiduo or https://www.timesfreepress.com/news/life/entertainment/story/2019/feb/18/ask-doctor-whdoes-retinol-do/488945/Retin-A. There are also over the counter ones such as Differin Gel.

Topical solutions might not always work the best, however. These vary from facial acne and don’t typically respond well to topical treatments. A dermatologist or even licensed aesthetician is best to extract ear blemishes. If you’re one of the unfortunate ones cursed with chronic ear acne, an oral acne medication could help in the long run.

An important rule to note is not to attempt to squeeze the clogged pore yourself. This rule is true with any acne no matter where it is. Doing so could risk infection with the open wound.

The best way to avoid inflammation is not to touch the blemish and keep the area around it clean.

Should your ear acne get inflamed despite your best efforts, it’s important to see your dermatologist. If an ear pimple becomes acutely inflamed, a cortisone medication injected into the area can help decrease the inflammation.
