When it comes to pregnancy, there are so many different things going on with the mom to be’s body, including acne due to hormone changes. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, acne is one of the most common skin changes in pregnant women.
Though there are over the counter and prescription acne remedies, there may be risks taking them while pregnant. However, there are medications, and at-home -treatments, women can take to deal with their pesky pimples.
Medication For Acne During Pregnancy
Salicylic acid is useful for reducing acne by helping to dissolve the dead skin that can clog the pores on your face. Benzoyl peroxide is good for killing bacteria that is causing the acne. Both are safe for pregnant women to use. However, both acids come with symptoms that can include dryness, irritation, and peeling.
Zinc is a natural mineral that helps with cell division and promotes protein synthesis. Pregnant women have a high risk of developing a zinc deficiency. If this happens, one may lose their appetite, hair, have skin lesions, or diarrhea. Oysters, red meat, nuts and seeds, and beans are all full of zinc and can help control acne.
Before using any of these treatments, be sure to speak with your doctor. Some believe that acne can be a sign of being pregnant. However, most acne develops from fluctuating hormones. During pregnancy, skin can change a lot, but acne tends to develop later on after a few trimesters. Some women may notice acne during postpartum, and it may clear up on its own. Unfortunately, others may require treatment to heal their acne.
